we are live in san francisco where authorities are trying to piece together what lead up to a deadly shooting at a bart station. we will tell you what tool they are using to investigate. six people shot in four separate incidents in a three hour span in richmond. the reason why they are searching for more victims. more than 45 rental cars torched in central san francisco. why that blaze they have been sparked by fire works. a small plane make answer emergency landing on the freeway. a very close car one driver had with that out of control plane. the morning news continues.

good morning, to you. welcome to a brand new day. it's monday the fourth of july i'm dave clark. >> and i'm claudine wong. pam cook has the morning off. let's start off with a quick look at your weather and traffic. good morning, to you steve. >> thank you. skies are clear. a little bit of a west wind trying to establish itself. i don't think it will matter if you are away from the coast. 70s and 80s closer to it. i think some hint of a sea breeze will kick in this afternoon. here is sal. this fire in san francisco has just gone to a second alarm at mission and bosworth. mission street is now shut down. you can see some of the smoke in the outer mission street. mission and bosworth near st. john's church there. near st. mary's park neighborhood. the fire department sending a second alarm. you will hear more sirens getting on to the area. we had report people are inside the building. again, let's put it back on the

map so everyone knows where this is guys. mission near bosworth. it's near al main knee and mission street is shut down. ktvu is on it. we should be there momentarily and give you a report on what is going on. let's go back to the desk. sal, thank you. an investigation continues into a deadly police shooting at a san francisco bart station. ktvu tara moriarty now getting new information about what happened last night. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. police are now reviewing surveillance video hoping it will provide clues to what happened. we are here at the civic center station. below us is where they shot and killed a man last night. around 9:45 an ambulance rushed the suspect to a hospital. the initial 911 call came in at 9:30. police say the suspect was on

the civic center station platform appearing intoxicated. two bart officers arrived at 9:45 and within one minute three shots were fired. at least two bullets striking the suspect. now initial reports indicate the suspect may have thrown a bottle at officers. one officer did suffer cuts to his arm. >> there is evidence at the scene. broken glass on the platform area. two open knives. that will be further investigated. at this point in time we have two credible witnesses we interviewing right now. >> reporter: since the oscar grant shooting on january 1st, 2009 bart says it has doubled its training for officers. now all we know about the suspect is that he is a white male between the ages of 30 and 50. the officers involved one of them a white male the other an asian male. barts chief will be holding a press conference later this morning in oakland at bart head quarters and we will of course bring you the latest from

there. we are live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty. investigators in the richmond area are busy this morning after an extremely violent night. at least six people were shot at four different places all within a four hour time span. all three people are dead. the latest shooting happened just before 11:30 last night on first and mcdomed. they found two people shot inside a car parked outside of a grocery store. a 27-year-old man died the other person at a hospital. richmond officers responded to center street and south 31st. that is where they found a 19- year-old man dead inside of a car. officers also say they found evidence at that scene that points to a possible second victim. a half hour earlier they responded to the north richmond area. that is where they found two people shot on west ruby. one of those victims died at the scene the other is in the hospital. just after 8:15 last night they also responded to ohio and

south 39th. they found one person injured after some kind of gun battle there. time now 6:04 overnight a small plane was taken off of interstate 280 in wood side after an emergency landing. that plane clipped a car as it landed in the northbound lanes near farm hill boulevard about 7:00 last night. neither the pilot or the woman driving that car was hurt. you can see the plane there. the cars rear window was smashed. the pilot had just taken off from san carlos airport when he issued a may day call. this could have been a disaster. >> this could have been a lot worse. the fact that everybody is okay, there were no injuries, no significant damage and we are grateful the number of vehicles that this wasn't having a much more tragic ending. >> reportedly ktvu has found out this plane had just received a brand new engine. it was on a test flight when the engine failed.

the ntsb is investigating. salvage crews have pulled the plane out of the water after it sung in richardson -- sunk in richardson bay. the pilot says a wake from a nearby ferry washed over him, filled his cockpit with water. the pilot and passenger were rescue by nearby boats. south san francisco fire investigators are trying to find out if fire works sparked a huge flame that sparked dozens of cars. you can see all of that dark smoke coming out of that lot. that is an overflow parking lot that belongs to hertz rent a car. 45 rental cars were burned. stubborn wind made it difficult for crews. one woman was trying to capture the fire on her camera and describes the chaotic scene. >> the flames are getting crazy. i'm thinking this is not looking good. it's moving along and there is cars that will explode or

whatever cars do when they get on fire. i don't know. >> the flames reignited after hours they started. 6:06. happening right now after six weeks of testimony the casey anthony murder trial is wrapping up in florida. we are peeking in. we are looking live inside the courtroom. the closing arguments started again after a special sunday court session yesterday. the juror is about to get the case later today. coming up for you at 6:15 we will is a live report from orlando on the closing arguments so far this morning. also in new york we still don't know what prosecutors will do next in the case against dominic strauss kahn. the former inf chief who is accused of raping a hotel made in new york. you saw him there. the hotel maid that accused

strauss kahn of rape has a history of lying. the chp holiday weekend crack down on drunk drivers continues today. as of 6:00 a.m. yesterday they arrested 161 people in the bay area for driving under the influence. last year 1 zillion arrests -- 128 arrests were made in that time period. the maximum enforcement period continues until midnight. the chp is investigating whether alcohol was a factor in a deadly crash that shut down interstate 80 in richmond. two other people were hurt in that three-car crash. the driver of one of the cars allegedly ran away from the scene. the search for that driver continues this morning. today is a holiday for most government employees. all federal, state, county, and city offices and courts are closed. the post office is closed. there is no mail delivery. all banks and savings institutions they are shut down for the holiday. but if you are driving in san

francisco be aware parking officers they won't take the day off. all parking meter regulations will be enforced which means you can get a ticket today in san francisco. time now is 6:08. we want to go over to sal who is following the breaking news in san francisco. >> that is right. department house -- apartment house fire in san francisco street. near bos worth streets. now this is about if you are familiar with the area you can see that now the smoke has stopped coming up from that building. but this is near the manilla oriental market. there is a huge supermarket there. there is st. john's church there and st. mary's park. there is a laundry mat on the corner there. and from there all the way down to the super market the buss are not getting through.

the 14 and the 49 have stopped in the area. ktvu is on the way. you can see smoke rising there from the area. fortunately right now it's light. it's not a typical morning commute. so we are not going to see a lot of traffic there. this is close to the glen park bart station. we will be there shortly to see what is going on. let's take a look at one live traffic picture here. it's light on bay area freeways right now for the most part since it is holiday traffic. 6:10 let's go to steve. thank you, sal. waiting for fog for those of you looking for that cooler pattern. maybe a little bit by the coast today. it is coming down the coast. there is a hint of a sea breeze. especially sfo and the delta. but i think by this afternoon it's starting to work its way in and the fog is working its way up and down the coast. it's just not here now. the fog cooler by the coast. it will be hot inland with 90s and 100s. cooler for some.

santa rosa 54. a lot of 60s. southwest fairfield west, northwest 14sfo. calm oakland. calm san jose. there will be some hint of the fog coming down. it will be very shallow. just cooler by the coast even though i think most of the day it will be sunny. there are areas where the west wind will move in. 70s and 80s coast and bay. it will probably take two or three more days until lake county cools down. 85 oakland. 86 hayward. 90 san jose. sunny -- sunnyvale at 89. there is a big spread on some of the temps. closer to the coast nice inland it will be warm to hot. more fog is on the way. that will take us into wednesday. a big cool down toward the end of the week. a new privacy battle over cell phones. this one involves police, prime suspects and a san francisco lawmaker. hackers target fox news.

welcome back. time now 6:14. california lawmakers will soon vote on a very important bill involving police searches. this one overturned a state supreme court ruling that allowed the police to search a content of a cell phone during an arrest without a warrant. the bills author says that

ruling clearly violates the constitutional rights of privacy. however, police organizations say cell phones contain critical information about crimes including some that are still in progress. computer hackers have attacked apple. anti-sec posted a tweet yesterday. they gained private information from an apple server. it accessed the data through a security flaw and software used by apple. antisec includes people from lull sec. they were able to break into several government websites before dismantling. someone discovered the password to the network's twitter account and started posting fake tweets last night. one announced the assassination of president obama. another one wished vice

president joe biden as new president. if you have a question for the president, just keep it within 140 characters. on wednesday at 11:00 a.m. pacific time president obama will hold his first ever twitter town hall. you do need to submit your questions early at hash tag ask obama. jack dorsey will select the questions and moderate the forrum. a 19-year-old marine is under custody after going on a deadly shooting rampage. he shot and killed four marines. so far there is no known motive. in egypt an overnight pipeline explosion is called an act of sabotage by the egyptian authorities. the flames shooting up out of that pipeline. that explosion has shut off the flow of natural gas from israel

to jordan. this is the third attack after a protest overthrew mubarak's government. thailand is going to have a female prime minister. now outgoing prime minister resigned this morning in bangkok after his democratic party lost parliament this last week. after six weeks of testimony, the casey anthony murder trial is wrapping up. jury selections are reported to get under way today. we have more on the closing arguments. jessica, do we know how much longer they will go? >> reporter: right now we are watching prosecutor justin ashton give his rebuttal marks. after that the jury will get it. keep many find fire works in the courtroom. prosecutors and defense

portray casey as a liar. >> he doesn't have direct evidence of premeditation and he certainly didn't convince me that kay sea anthony -- casey anthony is guilty of murder. >> reporter: after the rebuttal the jury will get the case. they could consider second degree murder and manslaughter. back to you. >> that is our reporter jessica sloan. thank you. time now 6:19. sal, you still following that big problem in san francisco? >> we are. just trying to get more information now. apparently this fire which was first reported just before 6:00 this morning has grown to a two alarm fire and just listening to the firefighters fight you can hear them talking to each other on the radios. they are still having quite a time with it. we were able to see from the live picture turn it over there. the smoke has kind of died down a little bit. this is on mission street

between bosworth antrummable. very close to st. john's catholic church. the muni buss are stopped on mission street there. if you know the area kind of a little shortcut through the area. you can still see smoke rising from this area. ktvu does have a crew on the scene. masses going up on the live truck. let's go to the san mateo bridge now. that traffic looks good. and traffic around the bay area is light on this day where most people don't have to go to work. 6:20 let's go to steve. thank you. we do have sun line. waiting for that fog down the coast but not here yet. it's hazy warm hot day. temperatures crank up pretty fast. we are already in the 60s on the lows. heat advisory was canceled. no fog yet. 50s and 60s. santa rosa down to 54. a lot of 60s around.

concord 65. san jose 66. temperatures i 42 come down by the coast. it's always a little tough on when the sea breeze decides to kick in. not before 60s and 70s for many on the coast or 80s and 90s around the bay. and upper 90s to low 100s inland. and then tomorrow we start a cooling trend. a lot of fog is on the way. much, much cooler pattern will take us into the week. california drivers pay more for car repairs than anyone else in the country. a new survey shows we pay about 20% more for labor when it comes to getting our cars worked on. that is cart -- that is according to carmd.com. with arizona ranking the most expensive place to get your car fixed. new mexico and colorado are the second and third most

these are live pictures of the house fire on mission street. this is mission street between bosworth and tumble. these are firefighters arriving at the fire scene. this is a three-story apartment building and the apartment buildings here are right next to each other there were there has been extension to some of the buildings next door. it looks like the fire is kicking up again between the buildings. this was just called in at 5:55 and it's still going. this is mission street near glen park. the muni service is not going through at the time. they are still doing a primary search of the building with the rescue companies inside to see if anyone is still inside. stay tuned allie rasmus is at the scene. ktvu reporter will have a live report at 6:30 just minutes away with more of the information she has found. now let's go back to the desk. time now 6:26.

a motorcyclist is dead in new york state after crashing his bike during an antihelmet rally. it happened in syracuse. police say the 55-year-old man lost control of his harley davidson and flipped over the handlebars. he later died in the hospital. state troopers say a helmet may have likely saved his life. almost all bay area transit agencies are on holiday schedules this fourth of july. bart and san francisco and muni are on sunday schedule tsz. muni will have extra service for the fire works show tonight. ac transit is roneoingen sunday schedule. cal train is using its sunday schedule but will have extra trains after the fire works show in san francisco. santa clara county vta will run on its sunday schedule. the county connection in contra costa will use its weekend schedule. ace train not having service at

all today. 6:27 and happening right now they are getting ready for the annual hot dog eating contest in new york. there it is. nathan's world famous contest. gets started this morning. san jose's joey chestnut is around there getting ready to win his fifth straight competition. last year he ate 54 hot dogs in ten minutes. it makes your stomach hurt thinking about it. today's competition begins in 2.5 hours. new this year there will be a separate event for women. >> all right. time is 6:28. there was a fatal bart shooting. a police shooting in san francisco. how the procedures have changed since the shooting death of oscar grant 18 months ago. four people killed in and around richmond overnight. we just talked to police. find out if they believe any of this is gang related.

welcome back. thank you for joining us on the ktvu morning news. monday the fourth of july i'm dave clark. >> and i'm claudine wong. pam cook has the day off. we are following breaking news in san francisco. firefighters were called to an apartment fire on mission street. allie rasmus just got there on the ground. what is happening? >> reporter: dave, we are seeing a lot of activity here in the last 15-20 minutes. this is the 4,000 block of mission street. right now you can hear glass breaking. there are firefighters inside the top floor of that building you are looking at. they are breaking out the glass. there is also a bunch of firefighters on the roof trying to tackle this fire from up above. that building that you are looking at is not where it started. when we arrived here 20 minutes ago we could see flames

shooting from the top second floor windows of this building. now the call about the fire came in just before 6:00. again, it started in a flee- story build -- three-story building with two apartments inside. i talked to the gentleman that lives in the second floor. he's not sure how the fire started he heard horns outside and people telling him to get out of the house. as far as he knew his neighbors got out okay. he took around he could see his neighbors out here. there are a lot of people outside watching firefighters tackle this fire. we don't know exactly how many firefighters are out here. if you take a look around you can see there is a few of them. i counted about four fire engine trucks out here. so far we have not heard of anyone being hurt in this fire of of anyone being trapped. again, you are taking a look at the fire that is now spread to a second next door building. firefighters have knocked out all of the windows on the top floor. you can see lots of heavy smoke

coming from the roof of this building. the smoke is very visible from far away. when we were driving here on 101 and 280 you can see the smoke from that distance. coming up we will talk to some of the firefighters out here and find out if they know how the fire started. also get an update on their investigation and how they are tackling this fire. again, this is a fire on the 4,000 block of mission street and the city's glen park neighborhood. all right time now 6:33. this morning richmond police and the contra costa county sheriffs department are working together to investigate four shootings. kraig debro joins us live where he finished talking with richmond police. >> reporter: good morning, claudine. i spoke to the richmond police department. in just a few seconds you will hear what she says. she says according to the gang unit there was no indication any of this was coming.

very violent night in and around richmond. four people shot dead. two people in richmond. 26-year-old derrick dunkin died in the shooting of 3200 block of mcdonald. that happened around 11:30 last night. dunkin and another man were in the car. the second man is recovering from his injuries at a hospital. then 19-year-old rashard bailey died two miles away. police say bailey was shot to death at south 31st and center. they may have -- there may have been a second victim at that scene. the victim as not stepped forward. >> we have not had any indication that any of this would have happen. we have not had any shootings leading up to this. >> reporter: now there was another set of shootings in north richmond overnight and that one happened at that street called sloan in north

richmond. we have very little information on that. one person did die in that particular shooting. according to lieutenant with the contra costa county sheriffs office a second victim who initially was reported to have died is not dead. still alive. investigators with the contra costa sheriffs office will be working together. 6:34. right now we are learning more about a fatal bart police shooting that happened last night at san francisco's civic station. tara moriarty is talking to the authorities and about this continuing investigation. tara. >> reporter: well, police say they have two credible witnesses they are interviewing. they are also pouring over survey vid -- surveillance video. we standing at the civic center

bart station. just below us is where two bart police officers shot and killed a man. last night around 9:45 an ambulance rushed the suspect to the hospital. he was pronounced dead within an hour. the initial 911 call came in around 9:30. witnesses say he was on the bart platform appearing intoxicated. now initial reports indicate the suspect may have shown a bottle at officers. one officer did suffer cuts to his arm. one witness said the suspect had a ten inch knife. bart says it has changed the way it handles these kinds of incidents. >> we doubled our training hours for each and every officer which includes the use of deadly force. how we report these and respond to them has changed.

>> reporter: now bart and san francisco police are both conducting parallel investigations. all we know about the suspect is that he was a white male between 30-50 years old. the officers involved are one white male and one asian male. they are now on administrative leave. barts chief will be holding a press conference later this morning in oakland at bart headquarters. we will bring you the latest from there. we are live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty. the martinez police department is struggling to cope with the tragic loss of a popular police officer. there is new shocking develop that is turning their grief into anger. time is now 6:37. authorities say a four-year-old girl drowned at a lake. divers found her body yesterday about 70 feet from the shore of

lake nasimiento. the family reported her missing. if your fourth of july plans include being out on the water the coast guard has a couple friendly reminders. anyone operating a boat today stay sober. boating while intoxicated is a crime. also have life jackets on your boat and expect some random spot checking by the coast guard and local law enforcement. they will be out on the water today making sure the boats have the proper safety equipment. we van update to the starry we have -- story we have been following all morning. the boat left the port on saturday. it carried 44 people. mostly americans. the 100-foot fishing vessel ran into an electrical storm and started sinking. all of the americans survived. the mexican navy now says one american is dead. the coast guard is sending a helicopter this morning to help

in the search. several bay area communities are getting ready hold their fourth of july parades. a fantastic parade that is scheduled to start at 9:00 this morning. take a look at the live pictures. see all of those chairs out there. people are serious about getting a spot for this parade. they have often staked out their places for days. they don't mess around there. that parade starting in a couple hours from now. danville's parade starts off at 9:00. also at 9:00 the east bay community holds its kitty parade. any child wearing red, white, and blue can join that march. the regular parade starts at 10:00 a.m.. san jose red, white, and blue starts at 10:00 a.m.. this should be a good year to see san francisco's fire works show tonight. thousands are expected to gather under clear skies for the big show. now this is what the crews are working on now. putting the final touches on

the launch area for the fire works tonight. 2,000 fire works will explode overhead during a 20 minute show. that we have an interactive map of the several fire works shows and parades taking place today. you can see an interactive map of all of them on the weekend extra tab. it's in our channel 2 website ktvu.com. all right 6:39 let's go back out to sal. it started as a slow morning for you and got really, really busy. >> it did get busy. mission street is closed between trombl and bosworth here. so the 14 mission which is on electrified line there is not running at the time. there is just a delay. it's not a heavy commute because it's the fourth of july. but you should avoid the area. let's go out to san francisco northbound 101 that traffic looks pretty good getting up to the 80 split with no major problems. if you are westbound bay bridge that traffic looks nice. 6:40 let's go to steve. glance thank you, sal.

fog coming down the coast. it will only impact coastal areas. no fog yet. a little patch down to santa cruz and monterey bay. cooler by the coast today. all signs point toward that sea breeze kicking in. there you can can see the fog inching closer. that will be shallow. i think by tonight it's going parallel to the coast. there are signs it will be cooler for some. especially by the waters age. some of the cooler marine air is beginning to show itself. a fog is not on the coast yet. but when it's inching closer that is usually a sure sign. hot inland conditions. cooler by the coast. still nice to warm by the bay. 50s and 60s temperatures a little cooler for some. still on the mild side. if you are already in the low 60s temperatures warm up nice here. southwest wind delta. west, northwest at sfo. there are signs the delta breeze is trying to get together here. i think it will as the system moves in. weak as it may be it doesn't

take much. temperatures all over the place your 70s, 80s, and 90s to near 100 degrees. alameda 78. 76 santa cruz. some of that patchy fog may take the edge off. still 80s and 90s to near 100 degrees around gilroy. all over the map on the peninsula. 60s to low 90s. fog, sun warm. tuesday and then here comes the much cooler pattern wednesday that takes us to cooler temperatures for everyone by the end of the week. >> all right steve. a wild fire battle in new mexico continues this morning. however, thousands of evacwees can go home but does that mean things are normal. plus we will have the latest on breaking news from san francisco where crews are on the scene right now of an apartment fire. good morning, traffic is moving along pretty well on the san mateo bridge.

morning. just about an hour ago. it appears i'm not sure what they are doing right there. but it looks like that is an animal they rescued. two dogs they may have rescued from inside of that apartment building. this is atly three alarms right now -- this is at three alarms right now. part of the problem with these apartment fires if you take a live look back at the apartments in question is that they so close together. that becomes a real big issue when they try to fight these fires. it looks like things are calming down there now. they may have been able to get a handle on this fire. we will go back live for a live update. keep in mind if you use muni that 14 mission line is not getting through because of all of the crews out there. time now 6:46 welcome back. here's a quick look at the other top stories we are following right now. three people are dead. three others are hurt after a violent night in richmond.

richmond police and the sheriffs department says the four shootings happened between 8:15 and 11:30 last night. investigators want to know if all of these incidents are related. also this is morning an investigation continues into a fatal police shooting at san francisco's bart station. this happened last night at the civic center bart station. two bart police officers shot and killed a man who was carrying a large knife. hours ago a plane that made an emergency landing on interstate 280 in wood side was removed from the freeway. that plane clipped a car when it landed on the freeway last night. no one was hurt. los alamos, new mexico is starting to fill back up with residence now that authorities lifted a wild fire evacuation order that 120,000-acre fire is almost 20% contained this morning. still though threatening ancient sites on indian land. this started after a tree fell

on power lines. some 12,000 residence have been out of their homes far week. they started going back home yesterday. in memphis, tennessee a police officer is dead responding to a domestic dispute call. the shooting happened at a hotel in the cities entertainment district. investigators say the gunman killed patrol officer timothy warren and a civilian. police arrested the suspect but have not identified him. a hotel guest that bumped in said he seemed off. he leaves behind a wife and two children. police in martinez say two men are trying to -- five weeks ago police sergeant brian carter died after a long battle with cancer. ktvu news spoke to him during a fundraiser last summer. someone is trying to take advantage of his death by fraudulently appealing for donations in his name. sadly someone tried this very same scam. after the death of martinez police sergeant or police

officer paul starsic. time now 6:48. it is the fourth of july. sal is watching the roads and the toll plaza too. >> that is right. traffic is light on bay area freeways this morning because of the fourth. so really the only thing we have had to deal with have been a couple incidents here and there. that we have had an overturned vehicle northbound 880 at fifth. they are clearing that on a normal day. that would have been a huge deal. there was no back up to this accident. just cleared up all the lanes. northbound 880 at fifth they got out there quickly and got it out of the way. we are very lucky even when there are any crashes. you can see 880 now. the accident on 880 again it was up at fifth on a normal day we would have seen it back up all the way to the coliseum. this morning there was no back up. take it easy out there. mission anabioses worth still an area to avoid.

see this fog start to win out and high pressure move out and lower pressure moves to the north. time now 6:50 and boeings newest big jet has made its first test flight across the pacific ocean. the dream liner has landed in japan. the jet is more fuel efficient. the jet was first ready for passengers are scheduled for delivery next year. which is more than three years later than originally planned. gas prices are down from last month which is a reverse of the usual summer trend. right now the national average far gallon of gas is $3.50 a gallon. here in the bay area we are averaging at $3.80 a gallon. but if you compare it with the last time last year at the same time, still 50 cents a gallon more. the governor of montana doesn't like comments from exxon mobile. he says damage estimates about

in montana cleanup of an oil spill on the yellow stone river continues. exon mobile says the spill is limited to a ten mile stretch. montana's governor says it's too early to make those comments. he also says the company was silly to make comments that the wildlife was found. he says physical inspection using small boats along the length of river should be made. 6:55. a hazmat team responded to a berkeley hotel after an employee found what he thought was a meth lab. the laquinta inn cut off power to one of the rooms after the housekeeper found it trashed and full of powders. it turned out they were common household cleaning materials and cooking mixes. investigators say the person staying in that room has mental health issues. 6:55.
